University Places Becoming A Problem This Year
The universities in UK are currently having problems as there are only 60,000 of estimated places remain this year that are still being sought after by a lot of students. Although 419,000 students have already been accepted, it might not be enough to accommodate them all. In Ucas, 13,000 students have been placed in clearing and they are still hoping to enter a course that still had vacancies. 64,00 students are still awaiting to be given a placement and a confirmation has not been given yet for most of them.
When you talk about clearing, you are talking about a system where those who fail to achieve the necessary grades or were not offered a place can request one of the remaining places. The problem is, there are only a few places left available this year for universities as applicants are being accepted on the spot. To make matters worst, the number of university applicants this year has been at its highest ever as it now at 682,000 (including international students) even with UK universities raising tuition fees at nearly threefold. This is 1% higher in number of applicants from the last year and the total number of places are still the same for this year.
The suggestion now is that some students should just consider reapplying next year to gain mroe chances. The clearing places is not so abundant for the very competitive and selective courses but there are still over 29,000 courses that have advertised vacancies. It would be better for most students to just reapply next year especially if they have better grades. The competition for clearing places this year is 195,000 people which is 10,000 more from last year and those that won’t be placed are 220,000 or nearly the same number as that. A lot them are turned down places or withdrawn applications.
Students have other options if they failed to gen on courses as they can try studying part-time, with other organisations offering degrees, or by looking for an apprenticeship. With the new reforms from the universities, graduates will be making a greater contribution towards the cost for their degree, but the good part is there will be more generous financial support that can be for them while you study and fairer repayment arrangements when you leave university and that is why they should not rush and just try to reapply next year.
Each year, more and more students graduate and even more would want to go to universities to study. It is not a shock that only a few courses can be made available for the thousands that actually want to have a degree but what can the government actually do about this?
